Guy Fawkes

Tomorrow evening (November 5th) all over England people will burn the effigy of a long dead mercenary on bonfires. They will discharge fireworks and consume hot dogs, baked potatoes and warming drinks. They will, generally, have a good time. I used to love it when I was a kid. I remember the cold dark night, the fire, the fireworks, the smell.

However, the image of Mr. Fawkes has become badly distorted in recent years. I blame the film 'V for Vendetta' for this, to some extent anyway. I loved the film, and saw it as a well made and entertaining film. However, it had the philosophical and political depth of 'Noddy'. And the 'Mask' has become ubiquitous as a symbol of some sort of juvenile rebellion against whatever irks one at the moment.

I am not going to write masses, the link below does a good job. Just remember what Fawkes wanted. He was in a conspiracy that planned to establish a centralised, Catholic theocratic state in England. Some rebel.
